Electronic gaming stands to spend record breaking amounts this year. Between various gaming products and a quick expansion in online and mobile gaming, researchers are predicting at least $74 billion in total spending.
According to research, total gaming spending will increase by approximately 10%, resulting in the $74 million total. This is a big increase, compared to last year’s spending total of $67 billion. The total amount breaks down in the following manner. Majority of the money will be spent on consoles, with $44.7 billion on software and $17.8 on hardware.
The total spending has noticeably grown each year and the trend is predicated to sharply continue in the future. Combining gaming with other forms of social media will help contribute to this. In addition advertising and the sale of goods through a game for virtual products will help increase totals. Research also indicated the popularity of smartphones and tablets will play a major roll in spending. In order to play these games you need to pay a separate fee to download them to your device, even if you already have them on your computer. Again, this will help rack up overall game-related spending.
Hand held devices are that area which stands to see the most increase in growth. For example, while Microsoft offers online gaming via Xbox they are also exploring creating games for smartphones through their Windows Phone 7 OS. Additionally, many games that are available strictly on computers through the usage of a subscription are looking to create versions for mobile devices. For example, it was recently revealed that World of Warcraft is interested in pursuing a version for the iPhone. Until then though, players must sign up the old fashion way by going online to buy a world of warcraft account.
